Student storage over summer

Checked Oct 2026 · numbers from the live index and the SSA UK 2026 report

A student room is 8 to 15 boxes and a suitcase. The unit market was never built for that, and June queues prove it.

Every June the same scramble: halls want rooms cleared days after exams, home is hours away, and the local stores know it. Summer-long small units near campuses get booked out and priced up.

The sums for a typical room

Ten boxes and a suitcase for 3 months:

  • Shared 25 sq ft unit with a friend: about £102.75 each at the UK average, if you both find a van, time it together, and trust the split.
  • By the box: BoxSpeed at £91.45 a month for that load, plus £39 collection and £39 return: about £352.35 for the summer, collected from halls and returned to the new address in September, even in a different town.

The return leg is the quiet winner: a unit sits in your old town, but a collection service delivers to wherever next year's house is.

Three rules for June

  • Book the collection before exams start; collection days fill in order.
  • Label every box with your name and September address, not the halls one.
  • Photograph anything valuable before it is sealed, for the cover claim you will probably never make.

Questions

How much does student summer storage cost?

By the box, a typical 10 box room runs about £352.35 for 3 months with collection and return included. A shared small unit can match that on rent but adds van hire and two trips.

Can storage be delivered to a different address in September?

With a collection service, yes: BoxSpeed returns to any mainland address on that postcode's collection day. A self storage unit stays where it is, which is the catch if you are moving towns.

Do universities offer summer storage?

A few halls keep a luggage room for international students; most do not. Assume you need your own plan by the end of May.
