Store locations

The store list derives from Overture Maps places data (CDLA Permissive 2.0), filtered to self storage categories, cleaned, de-duplicated and refreshed quarterly. Current snapshot: 4,234 stores, release 2026-09-23.1. We cross-check counts against OpenStreetMap without merging its records. A store we cannot place to a UK postcode district is left out rather than guessed.

Towns and distances

Town pages exist where at least 3 stores sit within reach of the town centre: 10 miles in most of the country, tighter in dense cities so lists stay local. Distances are great-circle miles from the town's postcode district centroids (ONS/OS/Royal Mail open data). Two towns never share more than half their store list; the smaller one redirects to the bigger.

Prices

From October 2026, a monthly sweep reads each store's own public website and records the standard price per unit size, including VAT. Offers are noted separately with end dates and never used as the headline. Every price carries its source and checked date. Prices older than 60 days grey out and leave the medians; a store unverified for 12 months is hidden. Until a store has a checked price, pages show the UK average from the SSA UK Annual Industry Report 2026 and say so. We never estimate a specific store's price.

The sweep is polite: one request per 10 seconds per domain, user agent StorageIndexBot/1.0 (+https://storageindex.co.uk/methodology/), robots.txt honoured. Operators can opt out: claim your listing.

The calculator

Unit side: rent at the town median once checked (UK average until then), store cover at £7 per £1,000 a month (Surewise case studies), van at £60 a trip (MyJobQuote), £12 padlock, 0.4 sq ft of floor per medium box. BoxSpeed side: the live boxspeed.co.uk pricing engine, identical code. Time is shown in hours and never converted to money.
